What are ETFs and how do they work?

ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) are exchange-traded funds that operate on a similar basis to standard investment funds, but have an important characteristic. Namely: they are designed to reflect the situation of a specific stock exchange index, stock, metal or cryptocurrency. The best possible representation of the current quotations of a given raw material is definitely the most important here.

When deciding to invest in ETFs, you need to remember about the risks it entails. Each investment of this type carries a specific, quite high risk. In the case of ETFs, there is even the possibility of losing all of your invested funds. For this reason, when deciding to start your adventure with ETFs, it is worth learning as much as possible about how to prepare for such investments – only then will we be more sure that the business decisions made will bring us specific benefits.

Although in Poland ETFs are still relatively little known, it is worth knowing that the financial products in question have been on offer since the 1990s. ETFs are very popular in the world. In 2022, the value of all assets accumulated as part of ETFs was over US $ 10 trillion. At the moment, about 10,000 ETFs are listed around the world, which are based on various stock indices, so everyone will find an ETF that will suit their needs.

ETFs – advantages and disadvantages

All financial instruments have certain advantages and disadvantages. Certainly, their strength is the  high level of security of the transactions. Each interested person has the opportunity to buy and sell ETFs on the online exchange, which is a great help. ETFs are also a great way to quickly diversify your investment portfolio.

On the other hand, the most important disadvantage of ETFs is the fact that such investments are burdened with a high level of risk. For this reason, it is important to remember that by betting on ETFs, we may lose all invested funds.

What makes ETFs so popular among investors from all over the world for years is the fact that they are liquid, have low management costs, and the entire investment procedure is very quick and efficient. How it’s possible? It turns out that at the moment you can invest in ETFs 100% online – without leaving your home. This possibility is available through online trading platforms.  It is enough to create a special investor account, and a moment later you will be able to use all the possibilities offered by a given platform.
